URGENT ACTION: Nuba Woman Activist Detained for 40 days

Published on April 23, 2012 in news

    Today is 40 days passing since March 14th   2012 when the  National Intelligence and Security Services known as NISS, Cracked down Jalila Khameis Koko house in Khartoum , and arrested her in front of her family members and relatives . Jalila is 45 years old Nuba woman, she is member of SPLM/N and very active in the women NGOs in Sudan, she works as a teacher in primary schools in Khartoum. Jalila is from Katcha village in Buram locality, Nuba mountains/SouthKordofan state. She worked with IDPs from the conflict region in south Kordofan and helped many IDPs in Khartoum .

The NISS kidnapped Jalila while she was at home with her sleeping clothes, her husband told Arry that“they just kidnapped her in seconds when we got outside the house they were already left”. Jalila didn’t have any access to a lawyer and her husband and family had allowed to visit her last week and they are deeply concerned about her situation as they didn’t have any answers from the NISS about how long they will continue detaining her , and the NISS also refused to allow Jalila to have any access to lawyer or presented any charges against her .

Arry is deeply concerned about Jalila detention conditions as many women activist suffered from ill-treatment and sexual harassment in the NISS detentions, therefore we calls on the Sudanese Government to urgently release Jalila Khameis Koko or press charges against her and urgently allow her an access to a lawyer.

Please write immediately in English, Arabic or your own language:

Call on the authorities to either charge Jalila Khamis Koko or release her immediately;

Call on the NISS to reveal  where is she detained and grant her immediate access to family,lawyer, and to any medical treatment she might requre;

Call on the authorities to immediately end the harassment and detention of Nubans on the basis  of their ethnic identity.
